The Right Tires for Your Truck

posted on
The Right Tires for Your Truck

You've got a truck, but do you have the right truck tires installed for where you take it? Most well-meaning people will point you in the direction of all-terrain tires when you tell them what you drive. But tires aren't a one-size fits all solution. Friends, family, and anonymous users like "OffR04dB34s7" might have suggestions based on what they know, but the optimal tires for your Toyota Tundra, Chevy Colorado, Ram Heavy Duty, Ford F-150, or other truck make and model will depend on how you're using your truck.

As we enter the fall hunting season, a popular time for truck tire sales, we thought it'd be a good time to look at different use cases.

Highway / No Off-Road Trucks (Commuters / Family Trucks / Work Trucks)

If you don't venture off-road, then you probably don't need the massive tread (and extra expense) of all-terrain tires. It's true that a set of all-terrain tires will look great installed on your truck, but they're also loud and don't tend to offer the best traction in dry and wet conditions vs truck tires designed for highway use and those conditions. A et of all-season truck tires might serve you best in this scenario.

Highway & Light Off-Road Trucks

If you drive on the highway and take your truck to light off-road environments, such as unmaintained roads, a set of all-season LT tires might be a sensible choice. This may include you if you use your truck to hunt; camp; farm; or a similar, "practical" application(depending on the environment). It's when you hit the more extreme off-road environments, such as deep sand and mud, that all-terrain shine.

Alternatively, there are all-terrain tires designed for drivers who primarily find themselves on paved roads but still do a bit of light off-road driving. We recommend comparing the costs and benefits, as well as thinking about how often your drive your truck where, when comparing these options. Reading reviews from those who have installed the tires in the past can also help you decide what's best for your light off-road use.

Highway & Off-Road Trucks (Deep Mud, Sand, Etc.)
Perhaps you use your truck equally for wheeling and commuting. In this case, you need a tire that offers the best of both worlds. All-season tires probably won't cut it when exploring an off-road environment (or at the least, they'll leave a lot to be desired). Fortunately, there are a lot of all-terrain tires for trucks that see intense off-road usage but still see a decent amount of highway miles.

Find New Truck Tires at Treadworks® (New Mexico & Colorado Locations)

To recap, when you ask about recommendations for the best truck tires, motorists have a tendency to tell you about popular, big tread A/T tires. In some applications, that's exactly what you need. But just because you drive a truck and go off-road on occasion doesn't mean you need an all-terrain or mud-terrain tire installed. You might spend 90-100% of your time on paved roads, for example. When it comes to off-road applications, like the beach, desert, or mud, you might want some all-terrains installed that are designed for those conditions. On the other hand, all-season and all-weather tires tend to beat A/T tires for MPG, braking, noise levels, wet conditions, and price. So if you don't go off-road or your off-road environment is considered light, you might forgo the aggressive appearance for a tire that gives you benefits in other areas.

At Treadworks in San Juan County (we have two locations in New Mexico) and at J/P Tire in Durango, CO, you'll have access to a great selection of light truck tires for all applications. We'll help you find all-season and all-weather tires, all-terrain tires, mud-terrain tires, and more.
