Can the Suspension Cause Issues with Steering?

Can the Suspension Cause Issues with Steering?

The simple answer is yes. In fact, a vehicle's steering system and suspension system are often written about and spoken about as if they are one system. There's a connection between the two to be sure—literally! The steering wheel is connected to the suspension system through a steering column and joints, and one of the responsibilities of the suspension system is to help keep a car's tires in contact with the road, which is important for, you guessed it, good steering control.

While not all issues with steering a vehicle are related to the suspension, there are a decent amount that are. These issues cause a range of symptoms, including increased swaying or bouncing on uneven roads, difficulty turning, a drifting or pulling to one side when turning corners, and an unusual amount of vibration or noise when driving.

Here are several issues with steering caused by the suspension:

Difficulty Turning: If you find it hard to turn at low speeds, you may have an issue with the power steering pump, but it could also be related to the ball joints and tie rods, parts of the suspension system that connect the wheels to the steering system. When damaged, ball joints and tie rods can cause the wheels to move independently of each other. This will make it difficult to turn a car at low speeds.

Pulling to One Side: The suspension system plays a valuable role in tire and wheel alignment. Worn or damaged suspension components can cause the vehicle to become misaligned. This can result in the vehicle favoring the right or left of the road and having a tendency to pull toward one or other other. If you find yourself having to correct your vehicle while driving, it might be due to an alignment suspension issue.

Vibration & Control Issues After Hitting Bumps: If you feel a vibration or shimmy, or the vehicle swerves and requires correction after you hit a bump, you may have an issue with your suspension parts, such as the struts. Bouncing after hitting a bump or pot hole indicates your tires aren't firmly planted on the road. A suspension part may require attention.

Loose Steering Wheel: If the steering wheel is loose or has more free play than it should, it could be due to the tie rods, ball joints, or a worn out pitman arm.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is recommended that you take your car to a qualified mechanic for a thorough inspection and repair of the steering and suspension systems.

If you're having trouble steering your vehicle and aren't sure the cause, contact us for assistance. We provide steering and suspension system repairs in Farmington, NM; Kirtland, NM; and Durango, CO. Our qualified staff will inspect your car and locate the cause.
