Winter Tires are a Necessity

Winter TiresLiving in an area like Farmington, NM, where weather in the winter can change drastically from day to day, it’s best to decide early in the season whether or not to purchase a separate set of winter tires. On average in the Four Corners area, weather changes from typical to unpredictable from November into December. Depending on the mildness of the temperature and amount of accumulation, tires made specifically for winter driving can save a driver time and money, while offering safety and security – and, most importantly, peace of mind.

They are best for tricky travel

Winter weather can be harsh, and if the area where you drive the most has hills or sharp corners, winter tires that have special traction and control will guide you though your travel. Snow, slush or ice can build up on unplowed roads, which can be a hazard, and winter tires will help you navigate this rough terrain. Most tire experts suggest specially installing a set of winter tires if you live in a place where the winter temperature is consistently below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. While all-season tires may provide some traction on wet and snowy roads, the enhanced traction and grip that winter tires offer is a better choice for smoother and safer driving.

Purchase your tires early

It’s important for consumers to purchase winter tires early in the season as a winter storm can pop up at anytime, which may result in a high demand for winter tires, causing a shortage of tires in certain locations. Call around to local tire retailers to see who has the best deal and prices. Remember, buying the least expensive option isn’t always the best one. Check tire ratings, features, and specifications to determine what tire will best fit your needs.

Store them properly

Winter tires are not intended to be used all year. Winter tires should be used until the driving conditions have improved and the temperature consistently stays above 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the average temperature increases, replace the winter set with either summer or all-season tires. After removing the winter tires, store them in a cool, dry, and preferably shaded or dark location. Most people keep them in a basement or garage where they can be kept out of the way. The best was to maintain the life of tires when storing them is to keep them off the floor on a pallet or rack. Tires should be stored sidewall to sidewall. Before re-installing winter, summer or all-season tires on your vehicle, they should be inspected for damage and adequate tread depth. If the tires have reached a remaining tread depth of approximately 4/32nds, consider replacing them before the next cold weather season.
