What is Your Vehicle Costing You Annually?

What is Your Vehicle Costing You Annually?

Ever wonder what you pay in a year for your vehicle when you calculate all the related expenses?

A new study is out about the annual cost of vehicle ownership. The study, conducted by AAA, looks at the five top-selling vehicles of 2023 and estimates their operation costs (maintenance and fuel) and ownership costs (car insurance, license and registration, etc.) within a year assuming the owner drives 10k, 15k, and 20k miles. As you might imagine, the type of vehicle you drive plays a role in what you should expect to pay, but no matter what you drive, you might be surprised by how much goes into vehicle-related expenses throughout the year if you're not already keeping track.

Note that this study doesn't account for automotive repair costs, so if you hit a year where a part unexpectedly fails or something stops working correctly and isn't covered by a warranty, that will add to the cost.

Let's take a closer look at the 2023 vehicle ownership cost chart and how you can save money in a year, as well as where you might not want to save in a year.

2023 Cost of Vehicle Ownership Overview

Here's what each type of vehicle costs at the 10k, 15k, and 20k mile marks in that order:

  • Small Sedan: $7,707 | $8,939 |$10,188
  • Medium Sedan: $9,638 | $11,048 |$12,477
  • Subcompact SUV: $8,351 | $9,718 | $11,104
  • Compact SUV (FWD): $8,623 | $10,066| $11,533
  • Medium SUV (4WD): $10,239 | $11,971 | $13,733
  • Midsize Pickup: $10,393 | $12,258 | $14,156
  • 1/2 Ton/Crew Cab Pickup: $13,818 | $15,858 | $17,940
  • Hybrid Vehicle: $8,445| $9,650 | $10,877
  • Electric Vehicle: $9,099| $10,112| $11,154
  • 2023 Weighted Average: $10,549 | $12,182 | $13,844

Based on the data, pickup trucks have the highest cost annually across all mileage categories while small sedans have the smallest. While the cost by vehicle type isn't unexpected, the overall cost might be surprising if you haven't been keeping an eye on your automotive expenses. Since these costs don't happen all at once, you probably don't realize what you've been paying.

And if you love trucks and/or off-roading, as many of our customers at Treadworks and J/P Tire do, that higher expense is the nature of the beast, so to speak. You'll have to find other ways to save.

Where Can I Save on Vehicle-Related Costs?

With this insight, it's only nature to ask: where can I save?

Here are a couple areas where savings are possible:

  • Fuel Costs: If you're in the market for a different vehicle, opt for one that is more fuel-efficient. For those of you not in the market nor interested in another vehicle type, change how frequently you drive. If you're the friend who always drives everyone around, consider sharing that responsibility. Similarly, you can catch a ride to work with a friend if it's on the way and your schedules are compatible. Outside of these suggestions, remember to keep your tires in good condition. Properly inflated tires are better for fuel economy. You can see the results of tire pressure on fuel economy from a study shared by the Environmental Protection Agency, and our team can assist if you need service for your Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
  • Auto Insurance: Don't throw out offers from competing auto insurance companies. Instead, shop around for auto insurance. If your current provider is increasing your payment for next year, don't be afraid to see if another company can offer comparable coverage at the same rate or a lower one. If you have savings due to a bundle (such as home and auto), it's possible that a different provider can do a similar or better bundle. What you drive can also have an effect on auto insurance offers, so that might be worth looking into if you are choosing between a few options and aren't sure what to get.

Areas Where You Shouldn't Save:

  • Maintenance: While it might be tempting to skip or delay maintenance to save money, this can lead to higher costs from increased wear and tear that results in repairs. Preventive maintenance helps prevent issues (hence the name) and keeps vehicles operating efficiently. It's also great to have a maintenance service history handy should you ever sell your vehicle, as this can net you a better price vs an unkept and unmaintained vehicle that requires a lot of attention.
  • Insurance Coverage & Registration: Cutting corners by selecting lower insurance coverage can be risky. Stick to the coverage that is right for you, whether you stay with your current provider or find a new one. You also need to stay current with your license, registration, and taxes. These costs are non-negotiable for legal operation.

Ultimately, you can save on operational costs by choosing vehicles with lower fuel and maintenance expenses when you're in the market, but you shouldn't compromise on regular maintenance, adequate insurance coverage, or ignore depreciation costs if you're looking for a cost-effective asset.

At Treadworks and J/P Tire, we provide tire and automotive services to keep you rolling along carefree. In addition to tire services, such as a wheel and tire balance or rotation, we provide alignments, brake repairs, suspension repairs, and CV axle services. We can also help you locate fuel efficient tires as well as inspect the brakes to let you know where you're at with brake wear, so you have a better idea of when you need to service them in the future and can budget accordingly.
